简介
Down Beat magazine award winning arranger Keith Scott´s music has reached a world-wide audience at online radio stations Smooth Jazz.com and Smooth Lounge.com. In his review of Keith´s ¨Waikiki¨CD, Wayne Harada of the Honolulu Advertiser said, ¨his interpretation of Santana´s¨´Europa´ is inspired and right on the mark, with the flugelhorn utilized as an expressive voice. This set is a gentle and relaxing excursion into the soul of a committed musician.¨ John Berger in the Star Bulletin wrote, ¨Keith´s title song ´Waikiki´could easily be beefed up and recorded for use in a film soundtrack. ´Minute Waltz and Europa´add instantly recognizable melodies by other composers to an album that rewards repeat listening.¨ The playing time for this CD is 79 minutes, 56 seconds. It´like two CD´s for the price of one. From the 130 plus songs that Keith has recorded and released to the world, originals and covers, These 21 songs have sold the most single song downloads online, making this collection a sort of ¨people´s choice¨ or ¨hits¨ CD. Keith included some personal notes of interest for as many of the songs as possible. 1. Fly Free (music by Keith Scott, lyrics by Carol Dunne) From the ¨Reflections¨ CD, this tune features my vocals and the $60.00 flugelhorn that´s on the cover of that CD. I bought the horn without a case in 1991 while poerforming six nights a week at a piano bar on Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. I still prefer it over my $1000.00 Yanaha and have used it on all my own horn tracks as well as many other artists projects. The brand name stamped on the center valve says ¨K H¨ with which I am not familiar, but I hope to research the origin of the horn someday. I would never part with this instrument for any price, it´s that cherished. 2. Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel) I somehow morphed this classic into a piano trio feature with a funky feel, and extended form and some fresh harmonic treatment. This is the only cover song from my ¨Songs for Costa Rica¨CD. 3. Black Orpheus (Louiz Bonfa, Marie Antonio) Also known as Ä Day In The Life Of A Fool,¨ this tune from my ¨Latin Jazz Piano¨CD has sold more downloads than any except ¨Rhapsody in Blue¨and Ëuropa¨from my WAIKIKI project. People seem to be haunted by this simple but beautiful melody. My wife tells me she is strangely overwhelmed with emotion by this rendition, even though it´s without lyrics. 4. Waikiki (Keith Scott) This song from the CD of the same name was released on Eroica/Turn On Records in 2004 and is receiving airplay at several of the most listened to online jazz stations, including Smooth Jazz.com and Smooth Lounge.com. Several other tunes from that project are also being played world wide. Thanks to this good fortune, the world has been discovering my music. 5.Do What You Can (Keith Scott) This Song featuring my vocal and horns was recorded in 1974 with our Philadelphia group ¨Windjammers¨. It later won runner up in the 1976 American Song Festival contest, and within a few days I rerceived a letter from Screen Gems Publishing in CA. They asked me to send a copy of the song, as their participating judge was not allowed to take any songs from the contest, and they had an artist who they felt would fit the song. We celebrated appropiately that night, although a bit premature. Two weeks later a letter arrived from Screen Gems informing me that ¨after further screening of your song, we have decided to pass on it for now, but if you have any other songs you feel good about, feel free to send them to us anytime.¨ 6. New York State of Mind (Billy Joel) This solo piano version is the biggest download seller from my ¨Piano Azul¨CD. I think it´s because of the unique arrangement I did for this tune, which includes some quotes from ¨New York, New York¨and some slick improvisation. 7. Blue Bossa (Ricky Robert Arroyo, Kenny Dorham) ¨Black Orpheus and this tune are neck and neck right now for the most downloads from my ¨Latin Jazz Piano¨project. With fun Latin percussion and some unusual alternate chord changes, I think it´s some of my best piano work to date and the public seems to be confirming that with their purchases. 8. Street to Nowhere (Keith Scott) This is the first song ever for which I wrote my own Lyrics. It was on the playlist for my garage band, ¨Leviathan¨in 1970. Our band had formed a corporation, sold shares of stock to investors and was reall serious about getting a record deal. On one of our trips to New York to meet with a large entertainment agency/publisher this song was listened to by three gentlemen. They wanted to hear it two more times as the trumpet player, drummer, and I waited with excitement. Their reply was simple. They couldn´t do anything for our band, but they wanted to publish and send my song to ¨The Carpenters¨. They had the connection and felt that Karen would like my song. Well, the other two band members went ballistic over the thought of me being so disloyal as to even consider giving up this ¨group¨song (as they called it) for my own advantage. The ride down the elevator to 49th St. was tense. The cold November chill on the street was palpable and I can picture the moment as if it were yesterday. This could have been a major turning point in my life. The three or so minutes on the street corner where I pleaded my case for going back up and signing the publishing contracts for my song were fruitless. My argument was, if I had a hit song, the group would have a better chance for a record dealdown the road. I think Todd and John´s take was more like if I had a hit song, there wouldn´t be a band anymore. This huge disagreement would form the basis for the bands demise a few months later. I had been pressured out of what I would later realize was one of only a few big break opportunities in my career, and probably the biggest one. 9. Teatro Nacional (Keith Scott) The National Theatre is considered one of San Jose´s most impressive public buildings. I wrote this tune in 2008 and released it on my ¨Songs for Costa Rica¨CD in August of that year. You might notice a little chunk of C.P.E.Bach stuck in there for a little classical flair. 10. Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans (Edgar Delang, Louis Alter) This is the biggest seller after ¨New York State of Mind¨from my PIANO AZUL project. Even though it´s a longing song, the stride piano style lends a bit of a happy feeling. I really love playing this song and included some intersting alternate chord changes. 11. Kuu Home O Kahauu (Traditional Hawaiian) This is the only traditional song on my HAWAIIAN PIANO CD. I love the simplicity of this tune. 12. Simple Samba (James S. Hall) The original version of this tune has two measure drum breaks at the end of each phrase. I cut them out on this arrangement, lending a little tighter form on this fun to play samba. 13. Limón Por La Noche (Keith Scott) Pujerta Limón is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica where raggae music is very muich alive. This ditty from the ¨Songs For Costa Rica¨CD has a vibe lead, and is actually an instrumental clip from a longer vocal song called ¨Warm Island Breeze.¨ It´s from the ¨Reflections¨CD. 14. Europa (T.Coster, C.Santana) Critic for the largest newspaper in Honolulu, Wayne Harada said ¨his interpretation of Santana´s EUROPA is inspired and right on the mark, with the flugelhorn used as an expressive instrument.¨ This is the second best download seller from my ¨Waikiki¨CD. 15. Rhapsody in Blue (George Gershwin) This is still the best seller from my ¨Waikiki¨CD. I was not trying to recreate the orchestral piano concerto. I used a few of the main themes and created a sort of jazz/disco version with some piano improv and a tight ending. 16. It´s Too Late (Carole King) This standard King hit is from my ¨Piano Azul¨CD and I used a Yamaha electric piano sound to give it a funkier effect. 17. Domingo en San Jose From the "Songs For Costa Rica" album, this smooth jazz original features a flute lead on the melody and a happy fingers piano improv in the middle. 18. Minute Waltz (Frederick Chopin) This is the best seller from ¨My Favorite Classics¨CD. 19. Moonlight Sonata (Ludwig Van Beethoven) This is the second best seller from the same. 20. Weather Channel (Keith Scott) This short, mellow, smooth jazz tune has been a hot download from my ¨Waikiki¨CD: I suspect that somewhere in the world it´s being used by local tv stations for their weather updates. 21. Show Me The Way To Go Home ( This fifty second rendition is the biggest seller from the ¨Piano Bar Singers¨CD. I used it in Florida along with the Mickey Mouse Club theme to close my piano bar shows.
