Romification came out of a soundscapes recording project that Pontius began in 2014, drawing on soundscapes in Berlin, Germany, and scenes learned while traveling in Italy in 2009. Looking back on the Italian experiences, and following a concert by Italian DJs Tre Gazelli, Pontius put together this concept album out of 62 individually selected samples of soundscapes, ambient noises and clicks, rhythmized into surround-sound spaces. Each space, blending with the previous one through sample overlaps, is a tone-poem that embodies an episode from ancient Roman history. The album was first sold on self-produced CD at concerts in Neukölln, Germany, as part of a performance series titled “Musical Alternatives” in January, 2015, before it became available for streaming.
