I created "Banjo Christmas: I Saw Three Ships Take Flight" back in 2010, when I was working for The American Gardener magazine in Virginia. Having volunteered to play music during the annual holiday dinner, I wanted to take some of my favorite Christmas songs and "banjo-fy" them, giving them a bluegrass twist. The song was so well-received that I wanted to share it with my larger community. The song begins with a simple melody of the classic "I Saw Three Ships," transitioning into an improvised banjo rhythm as I modify the melody with my voice. After an energetic banjo crescendo, the song ends with a relaxing return to the simple melody. This is a song that can be enjoyed all year long, but that is especially meant for a relaxing evening of Christmas music enjoyed by the entire family.

This song plays into my music philosophy of raw sound: no part of this song has been digitally altered. This is the sound of music straight from my finger tips and throat, with all its human imperfections and in-the-moment inflections. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed playing it.
