Tehillim (Psalm) is the melding of interpretations of written word in musical form. An implied antiphon occurs throughout and each psalm verse is freely presented with framework such as text painting and cell chordal/modal assignment. Individual lines may stray into a welcomed cacophony at times, but the beauty is still present inside the chaos - somewhat reminiscent of a society that struggles to see and hear the individual through a perceived clouded assignment of a group or label. A balance of perception comes into focus many times and offers the notion that this chaos can and is only moments away from finding a spiritual commonality that we ultimately desire. - B. As a soloist, Brad has performed on multiple occasions at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the International Trombone Festival, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Great American Brass Band Festival, the Jazz Education Network Conference, the Moscow Brass Days, the Brazilian Trombone Association Conference, the American Bandmaster’s Association Conference, the state education conferences of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, the Art College of Inner Mongolia, and the DIA T Festival in Recife, Brazil to name a few. As an educator, Brad has taught and given masterclasses at institutions such as the Conservatorio Pernambucano de Musica (Recife, Brazil), the Moscow Conservatory, the St. Petersburg Academy of Music, the Art College of Inner Mongolia, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, the Federal University of Pernambuco (Brazil), the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (Brazil), and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, as well as colleges, universities, and conservatories throughout the United States. Brad has been involved in nearly thirty recording projects under multiple recording labels and has performed for programs such as National Geographic, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the BBC England and WRFL Lexington. His recently released solo recordings - Song Cycle, ReUnion, The Whistler and His Dog, Conversations, and Rising Sun - can be found on all major digital distribution websites such as iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. Additionally, Brad can be heard as lead trombone on Wycliffe Gordon’s latest album, Somebody New (Wycliffe Gordon with the DiMarino/Osland Jazz Orchestra). He is a founding member of the Momus Trombone Quartet whose debut album, The Lexingport Project, remains one of the top-selling trombone quartet albums in the world. Professor Kerns received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Kentucky while studying with Dale Warren and a Master of Music Degree from Boston University while studying with Scott Hartman. Brad is an Edwards Instruments and Pickett Brass Performing Artist. He currently resides in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife, Katie, their two sons, Charley and Simon, and two dogs, Sydney and June. Raleigh Dailey is an internationally recognized jazz pianist, composer, scholar, and educator. He studied at Kent State University (B.M, 1991), the University of North Texas (M.M., 1996), and the University of Kentucky (Ph.D., 2007). Dailey has performed widely throughout the United States, North and South America, Europe, and Asia. In 2002 he was selected to perform at the 3rd Annual International Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition in Paris, France. He is the pianist and staff arranger for the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra as well as the pianist and composer for the Osland/Dailey Jazztet. The Jazztet has performed most recently at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam, Holland. Dailey is in high demand as a composer and arranger; his works have been performed and recorded by numerous college, university, military, and professional jazz ensembles. His most recent chamber works are the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano and Conversations for Trombone and Piano. He also was the recipient of the Al Smith Fellowship for Musical Composition sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council. He has published articles in IAJE Research Papers, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia, Saxophone Journal, Jazz Improv Magazine, Music Reference Services Quarterly, Notes, and Teaching Music Through Performance In Jazz. As Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Kentucky, Dailey currently teaches courses in jazz piano, jazz improvisation, and small and large ensembles. Under his direction, the Jazz Ensemble, Lab Band, and Jazz Combos have performed nationally at various jazz festivals, including the International Jazz Education Network Conference. His most recent recordings are What Happened Next by the Raleigh Dailey Trio and Measure From Zero with trumpeter Peter Evans, both on his own label Llama Records. Other upcoming CD releases include a duo recording with Rui Li and a CD by his free improvising ensemble raleighllama. A new set of solo piano pieces (Dreams for Piano) is due to be released in the fall of 2014. Saxophonist, composer, and educator Dr. Joseph Carucci received a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music and Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Kentucky. He has performed and recorded throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, and China with musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Phil Nimmons, Rob McConnell, Hugh Frasier, Manhattan Transfer, David Sanchez, Bob Mintzer, The Temptations, Eric Alexander, Louis Bellson, and the Broadway Musical Elf. Many of his compositions are available through Walrus Publishing and have been used on Pioneer Public Television for various programs. Prior to his appointment at Eastern Kentucky University, Dr. Carucci taught at Lincoln Memorial University, the University of Minnesota-Morris, and Transylvania University as well as classroom and instrumental music in California, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and New York. The musical endeavors of Dieter Hennings Yeomans span from new music on guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar, and theorbo and can be heard on the Nonesuch, Bridge, Parma, and Quindecim recording labels. Some of the highlights of the 2014-15 season include invitations to perform two guitar concerti with the Oberlin New Music Ensemble, a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers at the Cincinnati Conservatory, a concert for the series Guitarromania in Agen, France, and performances with Duo Damiana (duo with Grammy-winner flutist Molly Barth) at Oberlin, ISU, DePauw, Baldin-Wallace, Vanderbilt and many more. Mr. Hennings has been a soloist with Canada’s New Music Concerts Ensemble, Tito Sccipa Orchestra of Lecce, Italy, Eastman BroadBand Ensemble, Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Guanajuato, Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora, the University of Arizona Philharmonia, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Monterrey among many others. Mr. Hennings has won first prize in several prestigious competitions including the 2008 Aaron Brock International Guitar Competition (Toronto), 2005 Eastman Guitar Concerto Competition, the 2002 Villa de Petrer, Alicante (Spain) International Young Artists Competition, the 2001 Portland International Guitar Competition, among others. Mr. Hennings is an active proponent of new music, particularly that of Latin America, having recently worked with composers Mario Davidovsky, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Juan Trigos and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. Mr. Hennings has recently premiered works by composers Jake Bancks, Wes Matthews, John Aylward, Beth Wiemann, Hebert Vazquez, Luca Cori, Juan Trigos and Scott Worthington and many more. Hennings has received grants from the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music, the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (México) and the Fondo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes (Sonora, México) to commission and premiere contemporary works for guitar. Recent engagements include concerts with pop-singer Natalie Merchant and baroque violinist Monica Huggett as well as appearances at the Mexican Embassy in Rome, Festival SpazioMusica of Cagliari, Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Mexico, University of Chicago, Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, New York’s Joyce Theater, Julliard’s Paul Hall, and New England Conservatory. Mr. Hennings is a resident artist at the East Coast Composers Ensemble and the Eastman Broad Band Ensemble, with whom he maintains an active performing schedule. Since August of 2009, Dieter Hennings is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Kentucky and curates the UK International Guitar Series, which has brought to Lexington some of the finest guitarists in the world. Some of the artists featured on the series include David Russell, Paul O'Dette, Paul Galbraith, Nicholas Goluses, Adam Holzman, Jorge Caballero, Marcin Dylla, Zoran Dukic, Grisha Goryachev, and many more. Bassist Danny Cecil earned his BA in Music and MME (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Kentucky as well as a BS in Biology from Marquette University, and has been an active member of the central Kentucky music scene since 1999. He has performed and/or recorded with such jazz luminaries as Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, Kenny Werner, Sam Rivers, Bob Degen, Jeff Coffin and Howard Levy. Additionally, he had the great fortune of performing with Arlo Guthrie and the UK Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in fall 2007 while pursuing his graduate degree. Cecil currently plays acoustic and electric basses in many local and regional acts including the DiMartino-Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO), Barry Mando Project, Paragon Music Theater, Osland-Dailey Jazztet, as well as freelance work with such notable local artists as Jay Flippin, Orville Hammond, Raleigh Dailey and Lee Owen. Danny brings a wealth of performing, recording and touring experience to his work as an educator, and stresses the importance of versatility and comprehensive musicianship to his bass students. Paul Deatherage is an active performer and educator in the central Kentucky area. He is a versatile percussionist, experienced in many areas including jazz, concert, marching, and world percussion. Paul leads a varied teaching career, working with students at middle school, high school and college levels. Paul currently teaches drumset at the University of Kentucky. He is also on percussion staff at Lafayette High School Band, an 18-time marching band state champion. In addition, he maintains a private teaching studio at Don Wilson Music in Lexington. Paul has a very active career as a freelance percussionist. He currently holds the drumset chair for the DiMartino / Osland Jazz Orchestra, the Osland / Dailey Jazztet, the Raleigh Dailey Trio, the Walnut Street Ramblers, Sound Foundry jazz quartet, the jazz power trio, Barry Mando Project, and the classic rock/funk cover band, Deep Cutz. Paul has performed in a variety of musical situations including large and small jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles, marching bands, orchestras, the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, and the University of Kentucky steel band. He has performed with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, with Rakadu (Middle Eastern belly dance ensemble), with Abusua (The TTU West African dance ensemble) and with the Sound/Vision ensemble, performing contemporary classical compositions. Over the years Paul has had opportunities to share the stage with such noted artists as Joe Lovano, Doc Severinsen, Wycliffe Gordon, Allen Vizzutti, Bob Mintzer, Jeff Coffin, Arlo Guthrie, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Howard Levy, Jim Snidero, Zach Brock, Mario Pavone, Dave Ballou, Denis DiBlasio, Greg Abate, Roberto Sion, Ellen Rowe, Al Hood, Ron McCurdy, Vince Dimartino, Dan Moore, Miles Osland, and Raleigh Dailey. A sought after lecturer and workshop leader on creativity, formation, and imagination, Dave Harrity is a writer and teacher from Louisville, KY, where he is an Assistant Professor of English at Campbellsville University. He is the author of Making Manifest: On Faith, Creativity, and the Kingdom at Hand (Seedbed 2013)—a craft manual of meditations and writing exercises for individual creative practice and communal formation—and two books of poetry, These Intricacies (Cascade Books, 2015) and Our Father in the Year of the Wolf (WordFarm, 2016). Hear Harrity read his work at the Carnegie Center's Kentucky's Great Writer's Series in Lexington, where he occasionally teaches writing workshops. His work begins at the 20 minute mark. A recipient of an Emerging Artist Award from the Kentucky Arts Council, a William Alexander II and Lisa Percy Fellow at the Rivendell Writers' Colony, and an editor at Theopoetics: A Journal of Theological Imagination, Literature, Embodiment, and Aesthetics, he travels the country teaching workshops on contemplative living, imagination, and poetry. He is also the Chair of Outreach and Networking at ATRE. As well, he serves as a poetry mentor to writers through Ought Hours. In his spare time he enjoys making visual art/photography, playing blues guitar, home improvement projects, gardening, and spending time with his wife, Amanda, their children, and a menagerie of animals.
