Steaua de Mare was first featured on the Future Nuggets compilation Sounds of the Unheard from Romania Vol 1 in 2012. The compilation gained plaudits from across the globe and was even named by Andrew Weatherall as one of his compilations of the year. Steaua de Mare was instantly noted for their distinctive psychedelic fusion and became the highlight of the LP. In 2013 came the debut LP that brought "Babadag" and "Doamne Cce Greseala Am", putting on display a sonic amalgam containing a wide range of influences from the manele tunes of Vali Vijelie to Can, from psychedelic attitudes, kraut investigations to outernational delights like Bulgarian kuchek and early Romanian proto-manele. Steaua de Mare brings all these elements of Prog, dub, cosmic rock and contemporary gypsy wedding music (Manele) into a coherent new genre in itself. If you then add that they are irreversibly contaminated by analogue and early digital sounds then you have a passing image of this hybrid sound. Manele ("manea" originally meaning "Turkish song" in Romanian) is a musical genre that engulfed the whole Balkans in the past twenty years and is just about to produce even more new hybrids. It has already spawned mature voices and local heros such as (Dan Armeanca, Adrian Minune, Florin Salam, Vali Vijelie and Dan Drăghici). Manele goes under different names in countries around Romania and with delightful differences for each Balkan region, it sprung from contemporary gipsy wedding music the style has already breached the borders.
