This is the first solo CD from artist/producer Charlie Russell, the infectious melodies and inventive arrangements, give this self-produced 14-song CD an effortless sound. The disc is sprinkled with funky jazz melodies, provided by solos on guitar, sax, vibes, and keyboards with a cool bounce and a groove somewhat like Spyro Gyra and Roy Ayers. The title track " Playing In The Sky Room " features vibes and electric keyboards for a clearly unique sound. And when it comes to tracks like " Outrageous Vibrations ", an original tribute to the great Lionel Hampton, the sound switches to the moving rhythmic heartbeat of Bebop. The smooth jazz feel goes alone ways towards establishing a sound that's both radio friendly and artistically intriguing. There are moments of cool soulful grooves, with a fun rides in jazz improvisation, on the track " Break Up On " H " Street ", and the ripping funk bass lines and horn lines found on the track " From The Mist " with it's electrically charged guitar solos.
