Our society has been come to adopt a peculiar conception of life and of nature, one in which life is a precious, perhaps even miraculous phenomena, and in which nature is a harmonious process which we, as humans, bring discord and conflict into. Without saying a word against the incredible world which we are fortunate enough to live in, this conception could not be further from the truth.

It is estimated that roughly four fifths of the species that inhabit this planet are insects. Their world is not always noticeable to those who fail to pay attention, but it is one of constant conflict and danger. Their far less complex minds are evolved to care not as much about the survival of the individual as the prosperity of the larger community. This is vital, since their continued existence relies on the constant sacrifice of countless individuals. This tiny war, which rages all around us, is far too often ignored, but it is just as vital a part of our world as anything else. By studying it, we can learn a great deal about the nature of the often brutal and always fascinating world which we live in.
