Simina Grigoriu lines up Volume 12 in her Passengers series; a cross-continental VA division of her ever-reliable Kuukou Records. So far the series has brought together artists from Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Greece, the UK and Russia amongst other nationalities and next up is Spanish artist Sergio Pardo, Italian producer Alec Ben and Colombian duo Maunell & Leandroft. Sergio Pardo kicks things off - following releases on Spinnin Deep, Erase and Flashmob with an upfront dance floor killer. Bright, brazen drums are driven out across a powerful 4/4 that carries a potent, muscular force as it bursts out the blocks. An off-beat bass line galvanises the groove before a breakdown splits things wide open with hazy pads, some sultry brass and soulful vocals. Alec Ben then follows up with 'Disco Broken'; a murky building block which sets a thick sub rippling under dub-licked stabs and a tightly sprung shuffle. On-beat claps and a persistent vocal keep things buoyant and lively, dialling in a pre-eruptive mood making it a dynamite DJ tool. Maunell & Leandroft then finish up with a clinic in dance floor tension. A palpable energy is derived from a coiled sequence which twists at a polyrhythm against neat drums and a thick, subdued kick drum. Thorny vocals growl at the centre of the track creating a vibe that melts as nicely into an after-hours set as it does create a head-twisting interlude at peak time.
