BARRY CLEVELAND ON THE WORLD'S FIRST KALIMBALOM RELEASE [Google: KALIMBALOM --"Kalimbalom Solos Session" --"Today's Video" Feature (9-16-12) @ Doonesbury.com] Never one to play anything straight, Michael Masley’s radically (and ingeniously) modified kalimba emits a superabundance of singular and wildly dynamic sounds, creating an engineering conundrum ultimately addressed with Joe Meek-approved levels of compression and reverb. The album was tracked in a single session, recalling the recording of Cymbalom Solos 27 years ago, for which I also helmed the controls, and on which the very same kalimba appeared. In homage, a short sample from that recording begins the present album, transitioning into the new music via an audio effect called, of all things, Blackhole. Masley conjured this music from the Beyond in a single act of improvisational wizardry. Dig! —Barry Cleveland [Associate Editor, Guitar Player]
