简介
Life in St. Anne's, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland in the 1930's meant no roads, no electricity, and life on the sea. Whenever there was free time, Vince Collins played the accordion in the parlor of his family home. Next to 'chin' music, it was a way to entertain himself and pass the time. He first learned to play by ear from his father, siblings and visitors who would share their music. On a good night if the 'bounce' was good, he would pick up radio stations on the shortwave radio and listen to Irish artists coming out of WMEX in Boston....and learn the tunes he heard. As he got older, he would play accordion for the dances in his community, usually located in the one room schoolhouse or nearby church hall. At 80 years of age, he can still play with amazing agility and has a repertoire of over 400 tunes....none of which are written down...they are all in his head.
