简介
“There are plenty of talented artists out there, but what sets Jean Rohe apart are the suppleness of her voice, the integrity of her vision, and the grace she shows in her wide-ranging journeys across the musical landscape.” --John Platt, WFUV New York “A sure-footed young singer-songwriter,” in the words of The New York Times, Jean Rohe has been captivating audiences for years with her one-of-a-kind narrative songs. In her latest release, Jean Rohe & the End of the World Show, she showcases the unique, multilingual musical voice that she has honed since her debut record, Lead Me Home. Her intuitive aesthetic blend of folk, jazz, and Brazilian traditions led one Elmore magazine reviewer to call it “remarkable in so many ways I can think of no comparison”. The record won three Independent Music Awards in 2014. Jean's writing concerns itself as much with the internal world as with the external. Her songs, which range from fantastical riffs on old folktales to autobiographical sojourns, to “phonojournalism”, a genre of her own invention, have won recognition from the ASCAP Foundation and the New York Songwriters Circle. A true citizen artist, she gracefully approaches matters of social concern with artistry and heart. Her 2013 video release, “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” is an aspirational alternative national anthem for the United States, which has now been performed by choirs and bands across the country. No Depression wrote, “Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous.” Raised in a participatory folk music scene, Jean's inviting performances balance precise craft with the unpredictable boisterousness of community music-making. Alone or together with her eclectic ensemble, Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show, she has toured throughout the US, Europe, and as far away as Havana's Teatro Nacional. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. “a unique musical voice that sounds like a love song for a world imperiled.” Albany Times Union About the New Record Jean Rohe & The End of the World Show was produced collaboratively with Jean's long-time artistic partner, Liam Robinson (Becca Stevens Band), and mixed by Todd Sickafoose (Ani DiFranco, Anaïs Mitchell). It is a travelogue, relating stories in several languages from her lone journeys through her city and beyond. The eleven songs on the record blossomed from melodies heard outside apartment windows, excerpts from Jean's journals, snippets of poems, and street vendors' cries. Much of the arranging came together through an exploratory process with her 8-piece band, comprised of Richie Barshay, Christopher Tordini, Ilusha Tsinadze, Skye Steele, James Shipp, Rogério Boccato, and Liam Robinson. Physical copies of the album are accompanied by companion essays for each song, enfolded in a custom designed package by Ilusha Tsinadze and Melanie Ida Chopko.
