Music was never my plan. It was a passion that grew slowly and under the radar, until it burst forth, taking myself and everyone I knew by surprise. I can only say that God decided to drop a voice in my lap and see what I would do with it. Though I could play several instruments, I had no vocal skill to speak of, and suddenly people were asking if I had been taking singing lessons. I had no idea how to move forward, until my generous parents gave me the unexpected opportunity to record and produce an album of covers. Since I had not yet ventured into songwriting, I thoughtfully selected and arranged a collection of songs that had meant something to me in my musical journey so far: the first songs I ever performed for an audience ("Think of You" and "Safe & Sound"); a song that embodied my faith in God ("Give Me Jesus"); a tribute to my adoration of all things Middle Earth ("I See Fire"); my first duet ("Lego House"); the song I dreamed of performing for the coaches of "The Voice" ("Radioactive"). The final song and title track evolved from a favorite soundtrack for my own adventures into a send-off chorus, featuring all four vocalists who contributed to the album. I wanted it to be a finale of sorts, in homage to the years of musical theatre that helped shape me. I had the privilege of being intricately involved in the production process, from making creative decisions in the studio to designing the album. My vision for the project was that everything about it would feel natural. I wanted it to reflect who I am as a person, in day-to-day life. The photoshoot was make-up free, hair product free, and un-retouched. I wore my own clothes, in the beloved woods behind my family home. The use of Auto-Tune was forbidden. I played as many of the instruments as I was able. My mom sang backing vocals, the drums were manned by my oldest brother, a theatre friend played bass, and all three duet partners were close friends and jam buddies. I wanted the final product to be utterly authentic. "Keep Your Head Up" is a celebration of my winding journey into the world of music, and many of the experiences and people who have affected me along the way.
