Most people have the misconception that we all are born the same, equal in every way. But this belief is flawed. We all are born with the same basic principle in mind but each on one of us is born with something unique,something special that we have to offer the world, to share with the rest of mankind. Everyone has talent but not everyone is brave enough to share it. So here I go, this is me being brave... A Virginia native who grew up in the back woods of Southampton County VA, formally known as Derek Jamaal Smith, begin writing at the age of thirteen but didn't realize or take his talent(s) seriously until his late teens. He explains, "I always knew that I had gifts but it wasn't until I joined the Air Force that I found the courage to share what I could do with the rest of the world and once I did my focus in life forever changed". He started out singing at military gatherings, graduations, and retirement ceremonies, any and every event in hopes to make connections with somebody, anybody who could introduce him to another level in music, which it eventually did. After a few months he begin writing/singing on hooks with an variety of artist and the positive feedback he received from peers fueled his creativity even more. Eventually he began to produce his own tracks after being introduced to various music programs such as Reason, FL Studio, Pro Tools etc.. which eventually lead to the recording of his first studio album. He states " Once I started producing my own beats music was all I could think about. I begin writing songs while I slept, lol it's so bad now that I often dream of creating beats piece by piece, writing a song to it and recording it in my dreams, then wake up the next morning and re-create what I had just created in my dreams the night before! Needless to say my well is far from going dry when it comes to ideas" With the up coming release of his debut Album (Love & Imperfections) and the quickly growing support of fans the success of this up and coming artist seems to be guaranteed. Jamaal says, " I'm very proud of this Album. I tried to incorporate a little bit of everything in it so that despite what type of music you mainly listen to you'll find a song on the album you love. Musically I drew inspiration from 90's hip hop, from 70's and 80's pop/funk and from the great ballads from the the late 80's early 90's. I wanted to make a modern but classic album, something that if you played everyone in every age group and every music lover despite you're personal preference would enjoy." Love & Imperfections was written with the theme of love in mind, it starts of with up tempo songs such as (So Good, My Baby and Calling My Name. Songs that represent how the beginning stages of a relationship feels. Then the album continues with songs like (Hard To Love You, and Lose of Sanity) which show the hardships of a relationship. And the Album ends with songs like Hard To Say Goodbye and Overnight) which covers how it feels to have a relationship fail. Jamaal Explains " I wanted to tell a story with this album, nobody does that anymore, I wanted people to really feel that euphoric feeling you get when you first fall in love, to relate to the trails that come with being in a relationship and really understand the pain that a relationship can cause if it goes wrong". Jamaal is currently preparing for his move to South Korea to promote his debut album (Love & Imperfections) He says " I'm so excited to get started, to share my music with the rest of the world, all I needed was a way to get my music out and know that I've found it I'm never stopping." Jamaal Marvel is quickly realizing his dream, accumulating fans where ever he goes.
