Modern Life is an ambitious modern jazz recording featuring the compositional and improvisational talents of Kevin Reilly on guitars and multiple instruments. It combines several sections and various musical styles from straight-ahead to contemporary jazz and back again. This entirely self-produced effort utilizes numerous guitar and guitar synthesizer sonorities, along with a full range of accompaniment tracks that give the piece its unique flavor and drive. The track’s recurring main theme provides the basis for the intriguing off-shoots into new sonic territories. Like going on a trek that eventually returns home, Modern Life is a journey through various musical landscapes that returns to its main theme with satisfying finality. All of the instrumental tracks, except for those containing drum kits, were created and performed by Kevin Reilly utilizing his collection of guitars and synthesizers. The drum tracks were created from samples played by the great Adam Nussbaum (Drum tracks from Jamey Aebersold’s “Vol. 114 - Good Time”, Used by permission from Jamey Aebersold Jazz), with some help from the equally great Peter Erskine (from Sampleheads’ “Peter Erskine Living Drums”, used by permission from Sampleheads).
