No one, including us, will ever know for sure exactly how long we worked on Squid 4. We don’t take notes on that kind of thing. Or worry about it too much. But if you really had to know…and asked the question, you’d probably get a smartass comment like “until it was finished.” Or an evasive self-deprecating remark like “as long as we could stand it.” Because we really don’t know and it really doesn’t matter. Squid 4 is about as homegrown and independent a record as any band could likely make. Working for the first time on a digital audio workstation, we learned the ropes, took our lumps and paid our dues. Progress was slow for a good long while, but in the long run, the new studio allowed us to get the sounds and performances we’ve always wanted. With four different guys writing and singing the songs, you’d expect some variety and you get it. Straight ahead rock and roll, chamber pop, rockabilly, grunge, alt country, and even some progressive influences can be found on Squid 4. It’s probably the most diverse batch of songs the band has ever recorded and yet the record always sounds like the work of one band. It also happens to sound like a record that only one band could make. At first, very few people even knew we were making Squid 4. We didn’t talk about it much or ask for opinions. For better or worse, we did exactly what we wanted to do on Squid 4. It’s finished now and ready for the world. We hope you enjoy it.
