Soft Layers is an electronic duo comprised of multi-instrumentalist Dave Mann and vocalist/programmer Emily Chimiak. Based out of Washington DC, a city with two souls, the gritty and the political, and the atmospheric and pensive, Soft Layers has chosen a name that is far from being a mere identifier, but more likely a definite aesthetic statement. The outfit has in fact built its entire creative process on the harmonious interplay between opposites: songs that spring from melodies crafted on an acoustic guitar are then translated into electronic compositions, while Chimiak’s vocals infuse them with the all too human power of emotions. The proportioned yet rich sonic textures resulting from this metamorphosis are the perfect platform for the duo’s main artistic intent, which is to say the exploration of the purely introspective, a sphere of our human experience that is as fundamental as somehow inaccessible. Soft Layers draws inspiration from diverse artists such as Explosions In The Sky, Thom Yorke, Crystal Castles, Metric, and Federico Aubele, a selection that indicates a strong penchant for eclecticism and dynamism, dimensions that are embodied by Chimiak’s astonishing versatility. The duo’s first single Les Poetes sees a fruitful collaboration with D.C. based producer Peach Stealing Monkeys, with whom Chimiak had been working for a while and with such great results that the inclusion of his contribution seemed like a natural progression. Soft Layers’s mesmerizing eponymous debut EP will be available worldwide from the 5th of May 2016 on all major digital outlets and the band's Bandcamp.
