It isn’t just his dark chocolate, unusually regal birthmark that sets him apart from the rest...it’s his warm tenor. Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Lawson, the oldest of three, began singing before he could speak. He inherited his vocal gifts from his beloved great-grandmother, Earlene. Lawson escorted his grandmother from church to tent to auditorium where he first discovered his longing to sing. However, it was his second grade music teacher that pushed him to go public and groomed him to win competitions. That’s when he knew he was born to make music. In high school, Lawson’s love of music deepened and he landed a full-scholarship to Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, where his music and acting training sharpened his ability to deliver power vocals and “really sell a song”. While at SMU, he directed the first gospel choir at the university, “The SMU Voices of Inspiration”. A proud brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc., Lawson also served as step-master for his award-winning “brick-tossing” Iota Omicron step team. Lawson’s move to NYC afforded him the opportunity to sing in Italy with Gospel USA in 2000. He went on to star in several musicals across the globe from New York City to Beijing, China. He’s played ‘Collins’ in “Rent” and ‘Berger’, who isn’t traditionally played by an African-American, in the rock musical “Hair”. Lawson pinpoints the time he sang one microphone away from the great Hollywood legend, the late Ossie Davis, as one of his most memorable moments on stage. If you scrolled through Lawson’s IPOD you’d find Sade, George Michael, Syleena Johnson, and Donnie McClurkin, whom he credits with being his biggest musical inspiration. He says “McClurkin is a moving storyteller. He sings from his soul.” Lawson credits much of his vocal style to the late crooner, Luther Vandross. “Luther had the ultimate vocal instrument, versatile and rich. His voice caresses your spirit.” Lawson began writing at the ripe age of seven and has penned several jams for his debut EP “Lawsonsoul”. Future classics “Soul Mate”, “Burnin’ Up” and “Chocolate Lady” are sure to get the ladies open for more. Often compared to Maxwell, Lawson says he sings to “change people’s perspectives on life”. When asked where he sees himself in five years, he envisions ‘”creating music that ‘inspires, soothes and gets you in the mood.” Since he first heard “Used to Love You” monopolizing the radio waves, Lawson has dreamt of working with John Legend and long -time hit maker Jermaine Dupri, whom he describes as “a musical chameleon”.
