简介

Little Thieves was recorded at The Concord Café, a bar in Toronto, Canada that served as the musical hub of its neighbourhood before it was sold shortly after this album was finished. “We rented out the bar and set up a studio in the back,” explained Campbell, “because I loved the acoustics and it was such a sentimental space for me.” A long-time stage actor, Campbell also takes on multiple identities in his music. His eclectic style – which combines folk, pop, soul and jazz sensibilities through sincere, humourous and heartfelt performances – has been compared to John Mayer, Joni Mitchell, Jason Mraz and Leonard Cohen. “In my own mind,” explained Campbell, “I sound like a group therapy session between Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Harmer.” Little Thieves embraces these disparate influences to achieve a varied and exciting sound. The songs on Little Thieves not only defy categorization, they also explore the ways in which people define themselves, and how these definitions become more complicated as we pass through the various stages of our lives. “I always sort of feel like I'm stuck between categories,” said Campbell, “looking young but getting older, being gay and feeling alienated from my masculinity. You've come of age, but you don't really know where you've ended up, and there are responsibilities that come with craving connection, with being a partner – in crime, or in love, or in friendship.” Campbell’s live performances are marked by the intimacy he creates with his audiences, which reflects that desire to connect with others. Little Thieves is the first album that Campbell has recorded with a band, enabling collaborative relationships with other musicians and bringing a new sense of community to his work. “The songs hold such meaning for me,” remarked Campbell. “Not only because of what I felt when I was writing, but also because of everyone who has engaged with the music and brought to each song their own meanings and experiences. I’m so happy to bring these tracks together in this way, and so proud of the album.”
