简介
Figureheads clearly carry a weight not readily available in much of music today. Part bleeps, part old school drums, Olsen's beats combine with squeezed bass lines to create a hypnotic layer - a groove that sucks you in to engage with the double headed dragon of Jer1 and Peg-Leg Gregg. Their debut EP carries deep insight and hope that rings like a bell. Hard-hitting and unashamed, the music consistently penetrates your skull - at times, like a sledgehammer, at others, a scalpel. The Figureheads speak with a deftness that shows mad proficiency in their craft, however these rhymes are not just mindless repetitions or riffing on street style and culture. The words, while expertly strung together, are obviously the refined thoughts of a well that runs deep with fresh water. They challenge and inspire, and I often find myself coming away with morsels that make me smile with surprise while my jaw drops at their technique. Listening to the Figureheads is like reading a wickedly twisted rhyme book that has been wrapped in modern life, classical literature, philosophical challenges and ancient religious texts. They issue bold words, but it's not the formulaic hip-hop posturing which presents an argument for the author's superiority. Jer1 subverts the genre by keeping a prophetic challenge just under the surface - provoking the listener, urging them to listen, to understand and to engage. It is a new breath of thought, mixing art, substance and ardour in equal parts - A jewel of an ep, poised to engage any mind willing, while inviting the soul to dance. - Nathan Johnson The Cinematic Underground UK (Producer of the Brick Soundtrack)
