This album addresses feelings and experiences that are part of everyday life; love, doubt, adventure. This thought is essentially where the album derives its name: To Norman. The "Norman" in the title is Norman Rockwell, whose artwork reflects everyday American life. Additionally, the album follows a life cycle, with the earlier songs being about young life and the later songs growing into adulthood. A third theme is the juxtaposition of love and doubt. The songs bounce back and forth between the two feelings, as people often do.

The themes of doubt and love hit their climax in the last two songs of the album. The fifth song, "Doubt", is short, simple, but very melancholy. "I have my doubts, though, I nurse them every day." However, the album ends up on a high note with the song "Young Again". The last line of the song, "You make me young again", is stated six times in the final section of the song, which reflects the six songs of the project. The subject of the song voices his love for his partner once for every feeling he ever had, doubt or otherwise.
