There is nothing like sittin on the porch playin the guitar surrounded by mountains and the ocean. That is what this recording is, just finger pickin the guitar on a nice day. It was recorded at home and found recently in a move. The cassette was not in very good shape but through digital re-mastering techniques and a talented engineer an CD was made. This recording is a digitally re-mastered copy of a cassette tape recorded at home in 1977 while living in Half Moon Bay, California. The recording equipment used is unknown and probably a simple set up. The recording quality was what you’d expect from a home recording at that time. The guitar pieces were played in front of a microphone with no engineer, processing or special effects. This is a live, unedited and one take per song recording. The cassette was recently found in an old box during a move. The box hadn’t been opened in over 25 years. Since there was interest in having copies of the recording a project plan was put into place to make CD’s out of the poor quality tape. Bob Harris was contacted for his remarkable mastering skills and his knowledge and understanding of recording the guitar. Bob was able to work his magic and recreated a new digital recording to salvage the original cassette recording. The recording is all about FingerStyle guitar arrangements more than the playing. This CD has three different styles of music: country blues, a few popular tunes form the day and classic Scott Joplin rags transcribed from the original piano scores. The arrangements show the unique capabilities of the guitar to perform a melody, base and internal melody lines all at once. This collection contains 18 guitar arrangements. The arrangements are original, modified versions of other guitar player’s arrangements and transcribed arrangements from piano scores and old recordings from the early 1900’s. The real credit goes to my teachers and favorite players. These include influences from: Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lenny Breau, John Knowles, Mike King, Rolly Brown, Otis Fuller, George Sakellariou, Dave Rimelis, Dan Minor and a bunch of old black blues players like Lightening Hopkins, John Hurt, Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and the Reverend Gary Davis to name a few. I hope I haven’t copied too much from these players. I mean, “What is Original” anyway? These arrangements are fun to play and are from a time where I was experimenting new things on the guitar. There are only a few written arrangements left so this recording is all there is.
