Jiaju Shen, a Chinese pipa player residing in America, recently released her first solo EP entitled "Black Silk." She invited composer Li Zong, who also resides in the US, to create three original pieces with different musical styles. This music, using an urban, contemporary theme to express stories and the modern tempo of our time, and hope to show the world that Black Silk is a strong testament to the emerging power and influence of traditional Chinese art. The EP consists of three distinct pieces. The song entitled "Black Silk" contains a strong Chinese flavor within a modern Western pop music shell. Not only the delicate blend of funk tempo rhythm and Chinese melody, but also the electric rock guitar-like rub, push, pick, and roll of the electronic pipa itself, is an expression of the joy and beauty of the Chinese woman. The piece "After Farewell" is simple and soulful, the pure sound of acoustic piano and pipa forming a wordless poetry. In " Marionette Dance,” the pipa dances under the direction the player. It uses Li Zong’s "voice solo" style through pipa alone, yet sounds like a jazz band performance. The three works are unique and avant-garde, but are accessible to people with a wide variety of tastes. Jiaju believes that this is an EP with a modern and urban feel, with the power to bring new life to Chinese traditional music. *The song entitled "Black Silk", played on electronic pipa(E-pa). It is a creation based on electronic string instruments and traditional pipa. Zheng Xi, an industrial designer residing in America designed and crafted this one and only electronic pipa after discussion and study with Jiaju.
