This is in fact not a song about old cars but instead a song about love. Not necessarily romantic love but instead a broader commentary on how love behaves between family, friends, and even enemies. You see just like those old cars with the bench seats, love allows space between people when necessary, but also allows you to be close when you're weary and need someone to rest on. Any car before the nineties basically guarantees you'll get poor gas mileage, and in the same way love takes work. It takes a lot to keep it going. And just like the heavy frame of the first family vehicles, when something tragic occurs love can take it. It can get dented, scratched, and banged up and then still carry on.
