House with a touch of techno on the side. Perfectly sums up Garrett Voegels new Chrysalis EP. Hailing all the way from Italy, Garrett brings us four original tracks along with a dub and an alternative mix as well. This EP is as raw as they come! Opening up we the EPs name sake, Chrysalis is a drum machine driven affair with a heavy, pounding kick, driving highs and a running synth line that just locks you in and doesnt let up until the very end. The alternative mix has Garrett getting a bit cheeky with the filters, subduing the synth line at certain points, allowing the drums to really shine and push through. Morowaki takes lightens the mood up with some soft, subtle strings at the start with the keys fading in underneath. With his trademark driving kick back in place, Garrett takes a more organic approach with the drums with a congas providing the swing and groove and bassline throbbing just below the surface. Rolandesque is raw, upfront and unapologetic. Taking a page from Chicago, this track is all about the driving drums and aggressive arrangement. It bulldozes its way from start to finish, just a hypnotic, driving synth line that tears its way through with unabashed abandon. Substance of Nothing, as dubbed out and trippy as Garrett can get while still maintaining the energetic throbbing groove hes been maintaing this whole EP. An infectious synth line snakes its way into the track with eerie, haunting pads hovering just in the background. The dub is even more stripped down, filtering the box just a bit, creating a unique heady groove while still holding on to the raw, driving groove from the original. Coming all the way from Chicago, we have the Happyghost contributing his remix talents on Chrysalis. His take is more of a cover version if you will, re-imagining the main synth line with a guitar, dubbing it out and letting it loop while adding little accent twangs that can only be done while playing live. The vibe is thick and heavy, disorienting synths swirling around, drones bubbling just below the track, creating a sense of tension. Not until half way through does the kick come in, driving it home from there. Chlorophyll is back once more with his remix of Morowaki. While mostly contributing crisp and tightly programmed tech house numbers, Chlorophyll delivers a more laid back, sleazy house affair while keeping it chunky. Taking the keys from the original and giving them more air and presence, he lets the drum programming really move the track with a nice push and pull to the groove that implores you to keep dancing. Skooma, a duo coming all the way from Milwaukee, take Rolandesque and turns it into a heaving dance floor monster. With a drum machine driven groove from the start and subtle dubbed out accents abound, the track keeps on driving and pushing with an off beat bassline pounding between the tight, punchy kick. Late night warehouse fodder this one is! Making her debut, we have the first lady of Plus Plus, Remove Hyphen. With a skill set and keen ear thats been developed by years of DJing in and around New York, Remove Hyphens remix of Substance of Nothing is stripped down techno affair thats almost a bit freeform in its arrangement, taking unexpected but pleasant twist and turns through out with a screaming acid line being the driving element that pushes the track over the top. As an added bonus, label head Jason Bay has added an edit of Remove Hyphens remix. Taking out the bassline altogether, Jason has added in a low, rhythmic perc line along with a driving off hat to beef up the remix and make it more into a straight up DJ tool. its as heavy and pounding as Jason can get.
