The Empire is famous producer Skot Suyama’s Seattle-based band that was formed in 1997 while he was in high school. The band is composed of five members, all of them good childhood friends who are particularly skilled at their different instruments. Karen Mok’s 2003 hit ‘Love you to death’ and R-chord and Diana Wang’s 2015 chart-topping single ‘Love Doesn’t Need To Pretend’ were both originally sung by The Empire. Despite just starting this band in high school, all the members are now professional musicians in the music industry. Other than Skot, whose influence as a hit-making producer is prominent within the Asian region, the band’s female singer Melissa Reese is also part of American legend Guns n’ Roses’ world tour. While Matt Gervais is part of well-known American band The Head and the Heart currently touring across the U.S. Mike Gervais also writes children’s music, releasing an album Mikey Mike, The Rad Scientist. Tobias Burch makes funeral doom music with his band, Amort. These five music-loving friends began from jamming in the basement, but now are spread across the world creating music professionally. Yet they’ve never forgotten their initial love for music. Every year when Skot heads back to Seattle, the band reunites to jam and record together once again, remembering those great memories of pure music-making in the basement.Never The Point was written when Skot returned to Seattle one year, and because he had recently broken up with his girlfriend, wrote the verse and chorus for it on the plane. When he got home and met up with his five friends, the other band members quickly threw out more lyrics and ideas, and used a jovial atmosphere to create this song to cheer up the broken-hearted Skot. So although Never The Point is a song about heartbreak, you can surely feel the thick bond of friendship that comes through in this song; that’s the magic of The Empire!
