Dances with Elsa--the b-side to the Aquarium School single--shows Heroes of Toolik's wide sonic range. The back drop is a distorted open-tuned guitar technique from the Branca/Chatham pallet, as adopted by many of their descendants (Sonic Youth, Helmet, numerous others). Behind a waterfall of guitar and trombone, the subject is loss and remembrance picked out by the two vocalists. The groove flirts with a Stones/Let it Bleed grind. Produced by Wharton Tiers. It’s old school art-rock-- “deceptively catchy, hypnotically growling, post-Velvets grooves” says NY Music Daily, “a unique stew of riffs” (The Aquarian). Peter Zummo's solo trombone sets off Arad Evans' (Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham) vocals and guitar. Zummo was most famously in The Lounge Lizards; he is also heard with Peter Gordon’s Love of Life Orchestra and numerous other projects. With bassist Ernie Brooks, Peter collaborated with Arthur Russell and in the tribute Arthur’s Landing. Ernie shaped modern underground music, with the original Modern Lovers, and in bands led by Elliott Murphy, David Johansen, Gary Lucas and Jerry Harrison.

The accordion counterpoint is used as an acoustically more interesting version of the classic rock organ. Violin and powerful backing vocals by Jennifer Coates focus and drive the lyrics. Coates, new to Heroes of Toolik, is a noted old time fiddle specialist who performs regularly with her own band in that genre. The single is her first recording with Toolik and the sound has evolved significantly since the band’s first effort, the full length ‘Winter Moon’ issued in late 2012.
