"More than two decades after pop-savvy acid-eaters like John Lennon and Syd Barrett cracked the cosmic egg, this Sacramento songwriter slithered forth with a pure distillation of lyrical jabberwocky, brain-burrowiing melody and mystical psych-guitar fuzz. A richly textured assortment of futuristic psychedelia, cosmic pop, electro/acoustic experimental reverie and plain old grunty rock, Barbeau says Psychedelic Mynde of Moses is the album that most reflects his “natural” mind state – sonically a departure from both the starker, more introspective Plastic Guitar (2009), and the edgy, melodic optimism of Automatic Door (2007). Barbeau conceived Psychedelic Mynde of Moses as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Village of the Apple Sun (2006), an album hailed as the songwriter’s Sgt Pepper. While this latest set of songs is as “wilfully psychedelic” as Village, its sounds lean more toward Barbeau’s Kraut influences than ’60s retro, though he’s not above throwing in a few lush Beach Boys–inspired harmonies. As with most of Barbeau’s albums, guest artists and exotic locales abound. Psychedelic Mynde of Moses features contributions by Stornoway, Andy Metcalfe, Michael Urbano (Cracker/John Hiatt/Sheryl Crow/Todd Rundgren) and xrfarflight, and was recorded in Sacramento, Hamburg, Oxford, London and Cambridge, with the title track mixed by Paul Tipler (Julian Cope/Stereolab).
