You have to imagine there were these Venusians, on one of those missions they make every now and then to observe Earthling behaviour. Just for fun you understand, like we might visit the zoo maybe. It's 1966, maybe '67, of course they get to hear a lot of Motown, they listen a good deal to 'Revolver' and 'Pet Sounds', catch Hendrix on Ready Steady Go, James Brown, a little Rocksteady, happenings at Haight-Ashbury, Sly Stone at the Fillmore, Dylan at the Free Trade Hall, Bacharach in the studio with Dionne... This all looks like plenty of fun. A great way to get those Earth girls interested if nothing else. So as they head back home towards Venus they hatch a plan to have a go at this record business themselves. Before they leave they steal a couple of Studer tape machines from the BBC. They swear they're gonna bring them back when they're done. It takes a while. Actually they record pretty quickly, but there's the whole issue of getting backwards and forwards between Earth and Venus, which even for them with all that Venusian space-time science still takes about 40 years; and then you have to decide on a sleeve design...you can't rush these things. Anyway, they guess quite correctly that music fashions will certainly have moved on by the time they get back to Earth with their crates of vinyl, so they decide it would be fun to guess how Earth music might sound in the future; and that's what they record. This isn't easy. They hear the stirrings of Funk back there in '66, but it's difficult to imagine where that's heading. What will people do when they need to blend some James with some Brian Wilson?...more chords plus less chords equals...oh dear...and in the back of their minds they know somewhere along the line they'll need to invent Hip Hop; but this is all fuzzy, lots of guesswork involved... Technology will obviously have a huge effect, but will Earth computers end up running things like the Venusian ones already do? Will they be sophisticated enough by then to make drums sound more real than real drums like they do on Venus? Anyhow, they have a go. They enjoy this immensely, and pronounce the experiment a grand success. Obviously by the time they're half way back to Earth they begin to hate the record. They almost turn back. They remix it on the way 8096 times...each...and argue more or less incessantly about whose mixes are best. In the end they draw lots. Then once they reach Earth they spend 6 months arguing about whether having a myspace page is cool or not... in the end they decide that if it isn't possible to beat them then they may as well join them. Finally they release the goddamn record... No-one notices. So they search us out here at FRIZZ Records, for a little promotional assistance...we have to laugh a lot at their stage outfits, but we enjoy the infectious energy and invention of the music, so we agree to help out... ...this, friends, is AUGUST...stay tuned for the follow up, 2047!
