Will Rachofsky's debut album, Dream State, showcases 10 of Will's original compositions performed in a trio with bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Kayvon Gordon. "Flight Dream" is the first song, a musical interpretation of a dream about flying, where Will opens with an inspired improvised solo, interacting fluidly with Hurst and Gordon. Next, "Now That You're Gone, I See You Everywhere" is a true gem of a ballad, a reflection on hope and the good that people can do even after they are gone. Will switches to fingerstyle playing here for a softer approach. Significantly, he layout of the album is that it switches from one track to the next between two distinct moods. The first is deliberately jaunty and bordering on comical. The second is sincerely soulful and intensely reflective. In "Bruno The Tumbling Bear", we are introduced to a colorful cartoon character. Then, right away, in "Fever Rush Towards The Calm" we are locked in to a gripping emotional journey. The effect of this constant switching is that we are always being swung from one emotional realm to another, just as we are in our most engaging dreams. "Moon Elevator" is a ticking, shimmering waltz in which Gordon unleashes a fiery drum solo for a dramatic finish. "Flirting Dangerously Close Towards The Edge" explores the concept of iteratively expanding upon a melody, using an Ornette Coleman-esque approach to build and edge on release points throughout the form. "It Hurts Me That I Love You", closes the album with a surprise: Rachofsky singing on this final track, a blistering slow cooker that comes crashing down in a scalding climax. All in all, Dream State presents a strong musical statement with haunting melodies and masterful improvised solos from Rachofsky and Hurst.
