"Sketches" has received enthusiastic reviews from both the western and chinese press for the concept, quality and creativity of the music. It was a pioneering recording in its blending of chinese instruments in contemporary jazz fusion settings. This created unique and colourful music which captured the moods and energy of Hong Kong life. The album features original compositions by Ric Halstead and Dave Packer and some wonderful playing by guitarist Eugene Pao along with the very talented Dave Packer on keyboards and chromatic harmonica and Ric Halstead's distinctive sax playing. Also features the legendary Donald Ashley on drums and Rudi Balbuena on bass who have both been star players in the Asian scene for the past forty years. Chinese classical musicians Wong on Yuen plays ye woo and Li Tak Kong plays yang kam - both recognised as masters in their field.
