Thanks to the advent of the digital age, starting one's own label has never been easier. What's become arguably more difficult, however, is making an impression on your listeners. One such imprint doing exactly that, however, is Needa Records. The Scotland-based label comes straight out of the blocks here thanks to their debut release - and it's immediately clear that theirs is a musical agenda that adheres to the more considerate (and quality-strewn) side of the electronic music spectrum. Much of that, of course, is down to the dab hand that is Kiran Iyengar, AKA Jackmaster K. The prolific up-and-comer has seen his stock soar in recent memory thanks to outings on respected imprints such as Musicislove, Killax and Skylax. And the Tell Me EP is a rather special addition to what's become a rather special discography. The diverse package instantly earns its stripes thanks to the title-track; a heady concoction of whimsical, playful tones, sci-fi hues and poignant, melancholic melodies that are all wonderfully amalgamated under a robust house tip. The vocal flourishes too, and while the old-school hat-tip is obvious in parts, the track itself is anything but. The garage stylings then come to the fore thanks to the appropriately-titled 'Garage Dub', a more piano and percussion laden interpretation of the latter that calls on various cosmic tidbits and other heady, subtle intricacies with which to draw the listener in. Concluding effort 'Fantasy' serves up another effort in eclecticism that's also a fine exercise in how to expertly merge often contrasting sounds. This time, the bassline is more pronounced and steadfast compared to what's previously arrived, and much like the latter two, this one bridges the gap between vintage and contemporary techniques with a distinctive, unpredictable and unpretentious flair. This is expert stuff all around from a man and a label we're sure to hear plenty more of over the upcoming months.
