简介

Line up: Willy Taylor (R.I.P. 2013) - Drums Steve Moore - Guitars Pete Clarke - Vocals Mike Ardill - Bass Condemned- …And That’s how I found them “Why did you kill these people?” “Because they told me to.” “Who told you to?” “The voices.” “What voices?” No folks, this isn’t an excerpt from the next season of Midsomer Murders, this is the spoken word intro to “Almost Cannibal” from Condemned’s (not so) new EP “…And That’s How I Found Them.” I say “not so” new because this was released all the way back in 2003 but because we don’t have any more recent Condemned releases to review (why lads, why?), and in light of their stunning performance at Full Metal Racket, I thought it was prudent to at least include one review of an existing Condemned CD in issue #1. Why this one? Well, because it’s one of the most brutal releases this side of the Atlantic, well, ever. Not in the same manner of Welsh psychos Desecration, Condemned have taken the route less travelled in Brutal Death Metal by stepping back a notch, their songs giving the atmosphere of watching a murder as it unfolds, or the clinical process of a crime scene investigation without for one moment losing any of their crushing brutality. Not just brutal but down right chilling and scary. The beauty of this record that it doesn’t have to be played at a volume that will make your ears bleed to be fully appreciated like most Death Metal bands, but the same horrifying atmospheres and soundscapes are persistent even when the inhuman growls are reduced to a whisper. Of course, Northern Blaze doesn’t want to stop its readers from trying to deafen themselves with this record, but just try dropping those speakers for 11 down to 1 and you won’t regret it. The other thing that makes this EP stand out from the Gore Metal pack is its stunning technical guitar work and the band’s ear for well placed ambient interludes and voiceovers. Black Sabbath started playing the Devil’s music 40 years ago to scare the living shit out of people and at last we have found a band that have somehow managed to distil nightmares into audio form. What’s more is that these four songs (“Bits of Her Everywhere”, “Leave Me Alone (Or I’ll Kill Again)”, “Almost Cannibal” and “Criteria for a Massacre”) are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what this band are capable of. Get out to see them live and hear some of the band’s unrecorded material to witness how far they’ve come even since this release. Well done boys, skin up and grind!
