"To create music that is both intellectually challenging and emotionally accessible, and to bring people to value popular music on an intellectual level" – this was the shared dream with which Medulla was founded. Consisting of members Matthew Kennon (voice, guitars, keyboards, saxophone), Kevin Mullin (guitars, bass), and Brian Mullin (drums), the group was established in Austin, Texas in 2012. Medulla have made it their aim to explore the line between progressive and popular music, attempting to push that line to its absolute limit. Their debut album with R.A.I.G. Records is the first step in this direction. Written and produced entirely in Berlin, their adopted home since 2014, it is a snapshot of the group's period of growth from wide-eyed dreamers to focused and inspired musicians. "Remnant" is a conceptual exploration of solitude consisting of five interlocked compositions, bringing together traditional and progressive approaches to music and story-telling in an attempt to stimulate both the heart and the mind. Set within vivid soundscapes, the group's weaving melodies are brought to life by bombastic, pounding drums and orated with emotional sincerity. Each of the 5 songs is a narrative microcosm unto its own, with story lines and characters bridged together from song to song across the whole of the album. Modernity is key to the music of Medulla - while each member is studied in his instrument, unlike many progressive rock groups that exist today, Medulla does not lean on technicality or show-y solos to impress the listener. Rather, the members' instrumental proficiencies are considered another tool in the effort to create honest, emotionally rich music.
