Flowers in Flames was formed in 2006. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 2008, contains ten original tracks mixed by the band with Todd Tobias of Guided by Voices, distributed by Shinto Records. It was well-received and acclaimed by publications such as The Big Takeover (NYC), Skyscraper (Chicago), Mick Mercer's Journal, blog and book 'Music to Die For' as well as many other media sources worldwide. Flowers In Flames released its second studio effort, 'Everything And Nothing' in November, 2012, a four-song EP on Zorch Factory Records (Paris, France), digitally distributed in Europe through afmusic (Duisburg, Germany). It spent nine weeks on the European Alternative Charts, reaching number 7 as highest position. The new material explores further sound textures whilst retaining the energy of the band's first release. Mick Mercer CD Review 1/27/10 on Mick Mercer's Live Journal When the press release revealed members of this band had come from previously well known bands within the Akron and Cleveland area I suddenly thought of Jane Aire’s ‘Yankee Wheels’, which is never a bad thing. Similarly this record, for a debut, is strikingly imaginative, colourful, energetic and at times a melodic emetic when things get gritty. The band admits to fusing Gothic, Post-Punk and Psychedelic elements, although the psychedelic side of things mainly revolves around the guitar having a kind rosy feel in place of Goth prickliness, and there being a touch of the rock chickery about Cynthia’s vocals at times, as though channelling a young Stevie Nicks, or de-wracked Janis Joplin. They themselves cannot refute the influence of the Velvets, Bowie, The Cure or Bauhaus, and you can hear many other bands in there too, but the result is very much of their own making, which is no mean achievement. To mash together what they wanted, strain out the grot and leave us with pure, bitter delight is a recipe for intrigue, as you can soon imagine you’ve been listening to these songs for years. Maybe those in Ohio already know of David Chavez, Cynthia Dimitroff, Mary Plazo and John Lee. If not they, and everybody else, really should get acquainted. ‘Introspection’ is a wonderful opener, with stratospheric, nerve jangling guitar and morosely marching bass countered by the graceful and at times feathery vocals, with a richly flowing melodic incline. ‘Shadows And Darkness’ opts for the furiously spindly early Christian Death guitar style and bustling male vocals, but keeps things springily open and involving, ‘Third Wave’ is languid indie buffed and polished by subtle guitar with the nervous ‘Terrify Sin’ running like The Cure channelling Christian Death, in an earthy and occasionally capricious manner. ‘All The Glitter’ is a tough post-punk joust, with ‘Last Days’ dropping right out of Bowie’s nose, all hunky dory. The surprise for me came with ‘Cursed With A Flame’ that had a stark, rolling style reminiscent of Breaking Circus an off kilter indie/post-punk style you rarely hear, vocals almost rhythmically repetitive, guitar struggling like it has a phobia. ‘Vesper’ does an eager freefall punky rocky tumble, and stays treat fun with its wiry guitar grip. Is ‘Golden Town’ a bit Pink Floydy to begin with? I’m not well versed in them enough to say but it’ something old, delivered in a classic style, exuding confidence and obscenely catchy. Reverting back to tense post-punk guile ‘Stare At The Stars’ sees us out with, strangely, their least insistent song but it’s too late by then as you’ve been hugely impressed. Jagged, postpunk rhythms meet shimmering guitars and atmospheric keyboards in chord progressions that move logically but never quite seem to resolve. The forceful vocal thrust of guitarist DAVID CHAVEZ contrasts with the more sonorous tones of keyboardist CYNTHIA DIMITROFF, giving the proceedings a he said/she said timbre. The CHAMELEONS, JOY DIVISON and WIRE are touchstones, but not in glaringly obvious ways. Everything swims in a sea of reverb. Tense ditties like “All the Glitter” sound like BERLIN if that band had actually had any original ideas; “Introspection” and “Last Days” come off like a shoegazer SIOUXIE AND THE BANSHEES. There’s an aura of gloom infecting what might otherwise be upbeat melodies, as if we’re witnessing a constant war between the forces of light and darkness. So many bands that take inspiration from the 80s underground seem to just borrow the shallowest, most radio-friendly characteristics of the period. Le mélange n'est pas aussi contre-nature qu'il pourrait yparaître et donne son originalité au disque. Globalement, les titressont efficaces, le groupe a un bon sens de la mélodie et fait leschoses à sa manière, même si les influences sont évidentes. Qui plusest, la production assez directe, pas trop lisse, ajoute au charmeselon moi. Hélas un peu court, ce premier essai est prometteur etplutôt séduisant dans ses jeux de nuances entre noirceur totale et deséclats plus mélancoliques, voir presque apaisés. CollectivelyFlowers in Flames is influenced by the likes of alternative/goth band Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Velvet Underground, Joy Division and '80s cult band The Cure. Though they find inspiration from the '80s post punk movement, Flowers in Flames officially brands themselves as a post-punk/gothic/psychedelic band from Northeast Ohio area. Flowers in Flames describes their sound as "textured…we have taken an '80s post punk foundation and gave it a cutting edge sound," F.I.F.'s vocal/guitarist Dave said. Since their decision to join forces, Dave (vocals and guitar), Cindy (vocals, keyboard, and guitar), Mary (Bass) and John (Drums) have performed live with local indie rock band Mr. Gnome from Cleveland, folk/pop/punk band Ruby on the Vine from New York and Akron's own Full Wave Rectifier. Even though F.I.F. is currently unsigned and flying solo without a record label, they remain optimistic and foresee a signing in their future. After listening to a few songs on their MySpace page, it is clear that F.I.F.'s music will play a huge part in today's music obsessed society. In fact, with Flowers in Flames upcoming release of their self-titled debut album it wouldn't be surprising if they are signed by the holidays. F.I.F.'s admiration of The Cure is definitely showcased in their epic MySpace EP, especially in Track 4 "Last Days." Robert Smith, frontman of The Cure, should definitely feel flattered. Don't get the wrong idea though, F.I.F.'s style isn't completely Cure-esque. In fact, their sound is impossible to put into one category. Though there are certain parts in their demo that sound reminiscent of the legendary band, Flowers in Flames' sound is unique, This Saturday, Oct. 18, Flowers in Flames is scheduled to play all songs from their debut album at Square Records on W Market St. at 7p.m. for free. Previous F.I.F. shows are known to be animated and lively the strobe lights and fog machines accentuate their composition.
