Why pop songs in a classical rendition? Both of us had a long-cherished wish to perform pop songs dating from our childhood. But, how do you sing and play pop songs if both performers have had classical music training? Moreover, how do you translate the sound of a band to an organ and classical voice? We were immediately convinced after we had tried out some arrangements during a church service in early 2015, and so was the audience. Because of this shared passion we organised the first concert in the Old-Katholic Church in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. The reaction was simply overwhelming. The second concert, in front of an ecstatic audience, was also a success. We knew right away: we were on to something beautiful. For both of us this music comes at a turbulent time in our lives. The pop lyrics are so much harsher and more honest than the often detached and impersonal lyrics in classical music. These lyrics are about love in all its facets: fear, treachery, sadness, pain and separation. In addition, they tell about a deep desire, hope, faith and trust. A desire to be dearly loved. To perform this music as we do, we have both dug deep into our souls… Arranging and studying together affected us profoundly and stirred up many feelings. We would like to pass on these feelings of harshness and pain, but also of desire because they are recognisable to everyone. To perform pop music with a classical interpretation using this setup is quite a daring undertaking Nevertheless, we believe in this concept and, through these texts and arrangements of timeless pop music, we would like to lead the listener through a world in which being vulnerable is not acceptable. But vulnerability is a quality that, in our opinion, holds the greatest power. Because of the transparency brought about by the simplicity of a church organ (an instrument with many possibilities) and un-amplified singing, the lyrics are better perceived and come over more directly, than lyrics outplayed by drums and amplified guitars. It feels good for both of us to build a bridge between classical music and pop music and thus bring these two worlds closer together! We hope that the sheer beauty of these songs carries the listener away. Once, the many pop artists that appear on this CD wrote them out of love or pain. Now, from our own sincere heart, they are being performed in a classical style. Our sincerest greetings, Henk and Marjon
