简介
Singing bowls have been used in meditation for centuries across Asia, from India to Nepal to China and Japan. Metal singing bowls are in the class of instruments that includes gongs, bells, and chimes, which produce clearly audible overtones. The discovery that overtones quiet the mind for meditation must have been made thousands of years ago. In recent decades, sound meditation with overtone producing instruments has gained in acceptance in the West. Gongs are now frequently experienced in yoga classes along with bowls of every type, including the modern quartz crystal singing bowl. While the Western ear intuitively knows it needs overtones, quartz crystal bowls have been a poor provider. Most quartz crystal bowls do not produce clearly audible overtones and where overtones are emitted, it requires great skill by the player to bring them out. Most players of quartz crystal bowls seek the opposite effect—they deliberately try to hide the overtones and emphasize the sine wave of the fundamental. The quartz crystal bowls used in Sonoran Sound are unique. As a result of their optically clear design, they produce incredibly vibrant and audible overtones much like old Himalayan bowls. When the bowls are sung by the friction of a mallet around the outside, very low fundamental notes are heard in the third octave. When tapped or otherwise invited to open up, the bowls produce a rich set of overtones in the fourth and fifth octaves.
