The individual instruments also are played in only marginally recognizable fashion. While Phil Durrant's violin can often be picked out, generally played in its upper registers and extremely softly, trying to determine which of the other sounds are generated by synthesizer and which by trombone is a losing proposition. As with the subsequent release, the quiet and precision of events forces the listener into a hyperaware state where the tiniest sounds take on significance. The richness and apparently infinite variety of textures created is testament to the committedness and probity of musicians working in what might otherwise appear as an excessively confined and hermetic area. While there is nothing approaching a recurring motif or melody, the pieces move and breathe with a subtle interior logic and economy that is quite beautiful. Headphones are virtually mandatory in order to hear this disc as it was recorded; any everyday sound intrudes. Then again, listening to Beinhaltung as part of the environment, as an especially transparent form of ambient music, has its own rewards. Issued in a very limited edition of 400 copies, this may be very difficult to come by, but aficionados of the quiet improv scene will assuredly want to have this in their collection.
