Mortal Engines (aka Don Avera) has been making music since 1994 with the initial cassette release of "Deus Ex Machina" and with contributions to various CD complilations (most notably "A Storm of Drones"-Asphodel, 1996), and collaborations (Noisettes vs. Mortal Engines). Compostion for Pressure Vessel began in mid 2006 in preparation for a spot as a performer at the Playa Cafe for the Burning Man Festival later, that September. Other performances followed (like Decompression:SF...a Burning Man related event in San Francisco the following October) providing further input and inspiration for the tracks on the CD. Every song on the disc was the result of learning new methods and continually changing the compositional technique to each individual track. While there is a common thread runnig through the disc, each piece was designed to take the listener to a "different place" and create a different feeling. It's an easy pitfall for many artists to do one thing and, do it for 40 to 60 minutes. This is a common problem for most of the music industry today....a lack of variety....of dynamics. Pressure Vessel is the antithesis of that idea: returning to the day when an album was supposed to reflect the many ideas and feelings of the artists involved (as opposed to releasing a CD with one or two good tracks and 30 minutes of filler). The listener deserves better than that and, it was the intent of the artist to deliver much more than a couple of good "i-Tunes" picks.
