Sciatica, completed in 2002, found Squeaky at the height of their ‘switchy’ period. Shows from this era featured everyone playing pretty much every instrument at some point. Stylistically, the songs were all over the place—featuring their patented drone-y indie rock as well as thoughtful protest songs and hip hop-inflected rockers. The recording reflects this period faithfully.

Helmed by bassist Karl B, the album showcases the various personalities of Squeaky. “Quantum Theory” and “Swooper” are tightly wound, open-tuned nuggets. “Thirteen” and “Bayfront Park” feature Shermy D’s characteristic aggro-vocals and Steven’s power-precise drumming. “Sticks and Twigs” and “Country” feature Karl B’s sensibilities and killer guitar playing. And “Juice” features Shermy D’s braggadocio courtesy of The Lyrical Master. Sciatica may be the only album in history to combine songs about alien microbes with the lyrical admonishment to “put some lotion on my back.”
