Some have argued, arguably with good reason, that 19 naturally follows 18 as surely as night follows day. We’re not so sure. Could it be the fever-ish lockdown epoch we are living through? Suddenly nothing seems to add up any longer. Thankfully, however, some things still make sense. Football has returned, to lessen the fever, even if it’s behind closed doors. Even better though, Heideton Records has returned to bring joy even to supporters of Fortuna Düsseldorf. Not to be deterred by a global health crisis, the close-knit community of Walsrode has rallied round gathering various primitive musical implements, among them ukuleles and Roland-909s, so that Messrs. Metzenmacher and Borka could record their latest single, in turn raising the spirits of the entire Lower Saxony region and even some parts of Wales and Iceland. The track is called ‘Who Is It?’, the answer to which is obviously Joe Metzenmacher and Borka (and his elusive gang), who add their Germany-via-Detroit melancholy to the affair. The remix was done by Berlin-based Emanuel Satie, great-grandson of the great French composer Erik*, who turns it into something of an epic, synthesisers swirling up into dizzying spirals, like an over-energetic water fight, before collapsing spent. Bonus track ‘Soon Is Now’ opts for a deeper route, reminiscent of mid-90s Dutch house stalwarts 51 Days (never a bad thing), but what it lacks in hands-in-the-air value it more than makes up for in reflective emotion, delivering enough minor-key tears to fuel the sad bit in a Richard Curtis comedy. That’s what we in the business call a package: Heideton 019. *He’s not really, but it looks good on a press release.
