Every so often a tune just sticks in your mind and won't go away. I would hum the refrain for this tune to myself every day as I picked up my kid. It finally got to a point where I had to write this thing down just to get it out of my head. I began searching for the proper context in which to set the song and settled on a veteran returning home. I'm a teacher and the school where I work serves a lot of military families. It always puts a lump in my throat whenever I learn that someone's mommy or daddy is being deployed and I have always been awe struck by the courage shown by military families when loved ones are away. This song is an idealized portrait of what I would wish for every returning veteran upon their return. I also hope that it will be a reminder for the rest of us to do what we can to help these people when they return after sacrificing so much overseas.
