简介

Debi Smith is one the the Washington D.C. area's most versatile singers, at ease with popular song and classical arias. A soloist and member of The Four Bitchin’ Babes and The Smith Sisters, Debi is equally at home whether performing bluegrass with folk legend Doc Watson or Gilbert and Sullivan with the National Men's Chorus of Washington. Debi's voice has been praised by critics as "soaring," "ethereal," "radiant," and "majestic," and compared to everyone from Maria Callas to Karen Carpenter. Her latest recording is "If I Were an Angel" with full orchestra, arranged by James Kessler (National/Chicago/London Symphonies, Boston Pops, Renee Fleming and more), which was picked as one of 2014's best by The Washington Times. Debi's original holiday songs on the CD have been receiving rave reviews, and, as one critic put it regarding a holiday favorite, “If you’ve any doubt about how good Debi really is, listen to her out-muscle a string orchestra on ‘O Holy Night.’ We’re talking Diva Territory." A gifted composer, her songs have been nominated for a Grammy® and received many ASCAP Popular Music Awards. She has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Russia, appearing at festivals, concert halls and on many broadcast shows such as A Prairie Home Companion, Good Morning America, Ken Burns' The National Parks, and All Things Considered. She has been the recipient of numerous Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards) including Best Female Vocalist and Recording. Debi's performance from her book Look Up at the Hawks (based on her Nebraskan grandmother Ruth Moran Smith‘s Great Plains diary) has been aired on PBS and featured at The Smithsonian Institution. Her writing has also been published in Life's a Stitch, a book of women's humor benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation (Random House). Debi has been a member of The Four Bitchin’ Babes for seven recordings on various labels (Rounder, Hem-and-Haw, Shanachie) and continues to record/tour theaters across the U.S. with the group. She has recorded four CD's on Flying Fish/Rounder as part of The Smith Sisters featuring Doc and Merle Watson, Sam Bush and Mark O'Connor. In the fall of 2014, Debi's released her seventh solo album, which is her first orchestral recording. Teaming up with renowned arranger James Kessler, Debi has written new holiday songs that feel as warm and familiar as the stockings we hang by the chimney James Kessler says, “Debi‘s wonderful new Christmas songs vividly capture the sacred essence as well as the festive spirit and touching, personal warmth of the holiday season. Her refreshingly original music and lyrics, along with her beautiful vocal performances, make this album a welcome addition to the traditional holiday listening repertoire.” "Showcases the heavenly aspects of Smith’s vocal range and appeal... seraphic vocals and lovely renderings boasting Smith-penned lyrics that set it apart.” -The Washington Post “If you’ve any doubt about how good Debi really is, listen to her out-muscle a string orchestra on ‘O Holy Night.’ We’re talking Diva Territory.” -The Valley Advocate “Smith’s talents are anything but limited... heavenly.” -Billboard Magazine
