简介
Rap is a relatively new genre in the Middle East; while many people have been listening to it for years, very few have ventured into rapping themselves, with much of the singing talent preferring instead to go into traditional or pop music. There is also a considerable amount of dabbling in hip-hop and R&B. However, what Kuwaiti rap artist Dhari Al Dhulaei — known in the rap world as Big D — does is very different from that, he claims. Born and raised in Kuwait, Dhari raps about local and regional issues, as well as universal issues that concern people everywhere. He began rapping in 2000, at the age of 12, before the advent of YouTube and internet fame, he was one of the pioneers of his generation at starting the Arabic hip-hop phenomenon in Kuwait. He started his rapping career as an Arabic artist but in later years transformed his image into an English MC and faced challenges, both in terms of finding a local audience, and in being signed for record deals. However, in 2001, he signed with renowned producer Yacoub Al Mehanna (who has directed artists such as Rashid Al Majid) in a collaborative effort with other young up and coming artists such as Dhari. This was nonetheless short-lived, and he was then forced to take up a more independent path. In 2008, he signed another recording contract with Faisal Al Eissa C.E.O of Smile TV (who were responsible for bringing Massari to Kuwait), but this was also terminated shortly afterwards due to technical damage which could not be restored. Dhari attended the Universal American School and American School of Kuwait, and went on to continue his education for a few years in Bahrain. He works full time as a Computer Engineer at KNPC – The Kuwait National Petroleum Company. Dhari has a long musical history; his father, is a renowned oud player in Kuwait, and his uncle, Abdullah Al Dhulaei is a famous violinist. As such, Dhari grew up with music in his home. He is known around Kuwait as an independent MC, as part of a small community of rappers and hip-hop artists. However, contrary to other artists in Kuwait, Dhari thinks of himself as more of a lyricist, and is more oriented towards the message of his work, rather than simply creating catchy beats and rhymes. “He’s a writer,” said by his K.G.R crew members, “That’s what he’s known for, sometimes we would visit his home and he’ll write for ten hours straight, and usually he’ll find the beat after he writes the words.” K.G.R is a simple compressed version of the phrase “Kuwait Got Rhymes” which Big D created mainly to prove hip hop is alive in Kuwait, it is now his movement name, and his crew name which consists with over twelve K.G.R members, He believes later on it can expand in the middle east and globally, and he believes that he will succeeded in exposing very talented infamous local artists which are a part of his crew. Big D then began collaborating with other English-speaking artists. His most successful collaboration was with a worldwide recognized artist that is officially signed to the record label "Death Row" known as "Young Noble" who is a group member of “The Outlawz” the American hip hop group that was established by Tupac Shakur the greatest rapper in the world. Big D also featured local artists such as Skywalker, O-Zone, Juicy Jay, Killa D, The General, Hera, Deep Raw, B-EZ, Illuisve, Yung S.o.o.n, Grizzly, Grime, Lyr1kz, Hersh, and K-Nyne in his music. Big D was also involved in a Kuwait Cypher that featured more local MC’s such as MC Element, LC, Traphique, Djiby, Shane, D-ZL, Solo, Mejudice, MC Armani, and attended freestyle battles his most viewed rap battle in Kuwait was against his good friend Don Vita. Big D has appeared in Al-Watan TV, Kuwait-Music.com, Arab Times News, live tours and shows for example: Camp Arifjan – The Kuwait Underground Tour, which was dedicated to the American military troops in Kuwait, and in Rotana Hotel with guest appearance of DJ Smallz, Southern Smoke. His music is also a way of spreading awareness on Arab issues to the outside world from a different perspective, and worldwide hidden truth (Conspiracies) hard street bangers, mainly genuine hip hop made of sick lyrics and sharing experience in a familiar way. He has written over four hundred songs, and he has worked with many companies such as Nazaer, Romco and Awtar, his new album is entitled "Liberty" released 2014 and his previous album was entitled “Divine Genesis” released in 2013. Big D is Kuwait's most credible Hip Hop artist to date. He has aspirations of bringing world wide acclaim to Hip Hop in the Middle East and has started by creating his crew KGR {Kuwait Got Rhymes}.
