"The Lesser Twin" is an eclectic jumble of influences from the '60s and '80s while mostly jumping over the '70s and ignoring most things new, Pitchfork be damned. Paying tribute to girl groups ("Teenage Motorcycle Tragedy"), The Velvet Underground and Love ("I've Got My Suspicions"), and Neu! (hey, I said MOSTLY jumping over the '70s -- "Radiant City") while otherwise taking bits and pieces from Sly & the Family Stone, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, the dBs, Epic Soundtracks, and Brian Eno, this record walks up to the edge of musical incoherence then spins on its heel and walks back towards glory.
