GENTIL was started on accident. It holds its humble beginnings in the kitchen of a French Italian from St. Paul. Tyler Rayburn and Jenessa Andrea wrote their first song during a thunderstorm. While maxing out on pasta, Tyler fiddled away on his acoustic guitar and Jenessa sang her jazz soul to the gods. The single ‘Orage’ was born. Over the course of a year, with Tyler’s obsessive fiddling and Jenessa’s tick to write, two EP’s emerged. The first, Orage - a tragic love- and the second, Petrichor - tales of love and continuation. The name GENTIL comes from the French word, you guessed it - gentil. Meaning to be kind or nice. Finding a French word was always important to Jenessa as it is a connection to her culture and life. It just so happened that as we tried to put our names together ‘Jen- Ty’ we realized the similarity to the French word. We also live in the ‘Nice’ capitol of the world - Minnesota. That, in combination with our desire to hear Americans butcher foreign languages, attached us to our newfound name.
