by Jason AnkenyAn absolute highlight of Sub Pop's golden age, this debut solo single by Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm is a merciless satire of Bob Dylan's The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan LP, juxtaposing a fairly straightforward, if scabrous, version of the classic "Masters of War" with a hilarious sleeve parodying the original Freewheelin' cover, with Arm and an uncredited female companion walking down the street, well, arm in arm, each wearing military gas masks. Arm's voice boasts an anger and bitterness that Dylan's own nasal performance never achieved, and Jack Endino's raw production sears the melody with droning blasts of feedback. The B-side, "My Life With Rickets," cops a credited Bo Diddley riff to couch a hilarious travelogue about getting f*cked up and beat up by a broad in Amsterdam. Classic stuff.
