简介
OG (Owain Griffiths) is a Manchester based producer and DJ steeped in clubbing history from the days of the now legendary Fuse night. With this kind of background it's no surprise that the ep is chock full of grimy bass, tight rhythms and a spacey vibe. OG's début ep shows a real knowledge of dance music history, enough of a knowledge in fact, to take and mash up genres and styles in a carefree way, making a release with depth, dancefloor sensibilities and real groove. While each genre is evident, this is a real crossover of breakbeat, dubstep, ragga, electronica and a bit of dnb for good measure. It seems that so long as it's got bass, OG's all over it. The ep kicks off with Seeker, a lush warm laid back number with big round subs, stepping beats and dub sensibilities. The sparse arrangement is balanced with sweeping pads and melodies that wouldn't sound out of place on early Banco De Gaia. The pace rises with Time Keeps on Slipping. Skipping beats and floaty atmospherics filter you into a classic break and gnarly bassline before spitting you out into a low slung groove full of underworld-esque flavours. Then it backs off to sweeping pads and a growing bass rumble in preparation for the dirty acid drop. Nothing But eases up the pressure next. Dubstep drums and old skool jungle loops dance around each other while the soft synth sounds keep the atmosphere misty, then tension slowly takes us to the drop. From here it's a real mash up of styles, but with a real bashment attitude. The bass switched from warm to snarling while ragga influenced rhythms tighten up the wandering synths. DRC is the last tune on offer. As soon as you hear the raw drums and heavy, heavy sub bass start to filter in, you know it's not messing about. The stripped back drums lock down tight to the b-line, the pressure only slightly eased by some timestretched vocal and passing fx. If huge dub soundsystems played filthy breaks, this is what it would sound like.
