简介
“Listening Between” is the debut of Landon Knoblock, a young pianist from Florida who has recently moved to New York. The album was released at the end of 2006 and since then, Landon has been touring America and Europe to promote it, gaining acclaim in Italy as well, where he opened for Gianluca Petrella and Antonello Salis\' duo concert at the “Young Jazz in Town” festival in Foligno. Landon is the composer of all the tracks on the CD, some of which were composed in collaboration with other components of the trio, bassist Joe Rehmer and drummer Austin McMahon. Saxophonist Phil Doyle joins them for three tracks as well. Signs of jazz tradition wind their way through Knoblock\'s modern, introspective acoustic jazz, but the music avoids aligning itself too closely with the tradition. As composer, pianist and improviser, Knoblock is influenced by caucasian pianists, above all, Bill Evans and Paul Bley: in the first place, he demonstrates a similar melodic taste and elegant, relaxed touch with a large dynamic range; in the second place, he has inherited a desire to experiment. Naturally, his taste for adventure is one of his most stimulating traits, typified on tracks like “Open Gate,” “Wilma,” “Mind Balanced,” (in which the emotional intensity reminds one of Charles Lloyd, helped by McMahon\'s use of bells and tortured wails from Doyle), or “Reminiscent.” Under its elegant, patinaed surface, “Listening Between” reveals not only care for detail and a perfectly balanced sound thanks to the incredible empathy between the musicians, but also a sincere passion for music which Knoblock manages to express with a few essential brush strokes—a gift not all musicians have. -Roberto De Virtis, jazz-convention.net Landon Knoblock is a creative pianist, an ambitious composer, and an adventurous improviser.
