I wrote this song during an ice storm in rural Virginia after reading about bad guys of the old American west. John Wesley Hardin had so many amazing bad guy things about him, it was begging to be a song. I wrote the words and chords and melody to the parts where there is singing, but it still needed something to bring it all together, so I called my friend Lynn Healey and played it for her over the internet during the storm. She came up with the cool interlude part between the verses. We performed it at our next show together. I moved to NY a few years later and started gigging with some new friends who also took right to the song. Christian Apuzzo did a great job of bringing the lyrics to life and Mary Simpson's fiddle playing is always so fun and exciting. I decided we should record it to be able to share it with the world. We were lucky enough to have Tony Trischka come in the studio with us to record a great banjo part as well and Marco Brehm put down the bass part. I, of course, play the mandolin. It was recorded by Justin Kessler, mixed by Ron Rice, mastered by Bill Wolf. The way cool artwork is by one of my favorite artists and musicians named Ben Belcher. Hope you enjoy it.
