by Aaron BadgleyFollowing the demise of Weddings Parties Anything Mick Thomas began a solo career, and at the same time a new band, The Sure Thing. Thomas's voice is such a dead giveaway, and really this band is not that much different from Weddings Parties Anything. Perhaps not as melodic, and more of a rawer sound (the album was recorded in less than a week), but not altogether different. With two exceptions, this CD is comprised of cover songs that have been haunting Thomas over the years. His choices are at times odd, such as "Brandy" (although his version is quite good). His two contributions are quite brilliant and prove to be the highlights. "When You Go" is a heartfelt ode to a departed friend, which is beautiful in its simplicity. As with the rest of the CD, it is not quite rock, but not folk either. He does cover some traditional songs (such as "Moreton Bay") and for the most part these songs come off quite well. This is not a bad album and a good start for a new band. Fans are aware of Thomas's abilities, so it is no surprise this band has a great deal of potential.
